Three years after releasing his tenth studio album, I Inside the Old Year Dying (2023), English singer PJ Harvey presents “Voyager”, an orchestral song that may be a preview of his next work.
The track pays homage to the Voyager 2 space probe, launched by NASA in 1977.
Regarding her inspiration, Harvey wrote:
I was excited for the challenge to compose a song in the ‘voice' of Voyager 2. I have long been fascinated by the spacecraft and its journey, and asked myself what it might say to us if it could? This was an inspiring route to take to develop the song.
The Voyager 1 and 2 probes became famous for carrying on board the Voyager Golden Records , gold-plated copper phonograph records, designed by a team led by astronomer Carl Sagan. The recordings bring together images, music, greetings in 55 languages and different sounds from Earth, with the aim of presenting the diversity of life and culture on planet Earth to any extraterrestrial civilizations that may encounter them.
