The acclaimed Australian band The Saints was one of the pioneers of punk rock, although their name doesn't usually appear alongside names like the Ramones, Sex Pistols, and The Clash when discussing the emergence of the movement in the 1970s.
Their debut single, "(I'm) Stranded" from 1976, is considered one of the first punk releases outside the United States. Its release also caused a stir outside of Australia. Its success led The Saints to sign a contract with EMI in the UK.
Formed in Brisbane in 1973, the band consisted of Chris Bailey (vocals), Ivor Hay (drums), and Ed Kuepper (guitar). The three released the albums (I'm) Stranded (1977), Eternally Yours (1978), and Prehistoric Sounds (1978). Following Prehistoric Sounds, conflicts resulted in the departures of Kuepper and Hay. Bailey remained the only permanent member of the group in the following years, releasing several albums until his death in 2022.
