Heartless Bastards were formed in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 2003 by singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Erika Wennerstrom. Characterized by their founder’s powerful voice, the band blends blues, country, hard rock, and garage rock, while also incorporating elements of folk and psychedelia. After some initial lineup changes, the group settled into a trio, with Wennerstrom on vocals, guitar, and keyboards, Mike Lamping on bass, and Kevin Vaughn on drums.
In 2004, the band signed with Fat Possum Records after Patrick Carney, drummer for The Black Keys, forward a demo of the group to the label. Their debut album, Stairs and Elevators, was released in 2005, followed by All This Time, in 2006. Both albums featured a raw sound, driven by striking guitars and Wennerstrom’s expressive vocals.
In 2007, Wennerstrom moved to Austin, Texas, marking a new phase in the project. Produced by Mike McCarthy, the third album, The Mountain (2009), expanded the presence of country and folk in the arrangements. For live performances, the singer brought together bassist Jesse Ebaugh and drummer Dave Colvin, who had already participated in the band’s early recordings. With the addition of guitarist Mark Nathan in 2009, the Heartless Bastards began performing as a quartet.
This lineup recorded Arrow, released in February 2012 by Partisan Records. Produced by Jim Eno, drummer for Spoon, the album further explored the band’s blend of blues and rock. In June 2015, Restless Ones, their fifth studio album, produced by John Congleton and recorded at Sonic Ranch in Texas.
During a hiatus from the band, Wennerstrom released her first solo album, Sweet Unknown, in 2018. Heartless Bastards returned in September 2021 with A Beautiful Life, their sixth studio album, released by Sweet Unknown Records in partnership with Thirty Tigers. Co-produced by Wennerstrom and Kevin Ratterman, the album brought together various collaborators and expanded the project’s sonic repertoire, blending psychedelic rock, folk, and pop in songs about self-awareness, empathy, and the search for a more meaningful life.
