Spoon was formed in 1993 in Austin, Texas, by lead singer and guitarist Britt Daniel and drummer Jim Eno. Their debut album, Telephono (1996), released by Matador Records, featured guitar-driven rock that drew immediate comparisons to bands such as Pixies and Wire.
Their second album, A Series of Sneaks (1998), was released by Elektra Records. After a brief and turbulent stint with the major label, the band found a home at Merge Records for a series of albums that solidified their place in indie rock: Girls Can Tell (2001), Kill the Moonlight (2002), Gimme Fiction (2005), Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga (2007) and Transference (2010). During this period, the band established a distinctive sound, defined by minimalist arrangements, rhythmic precision, and Britt Daniel’s raw and unmistakable vocals.
In 2014, Spoon released their eighth studio album, They Want My Soul, on Loma Vista Recordings. The return to Matador Records came with their ninth album, Hot Thoughts (2017), an album that expanded the band’s horizons by incorporating electronic elements and synthesizers. Their tenth album, Lucifer on the Sofa, was released in 2022. Recorded in their hometown of Austin, the album returned to a more direct, organic, and guitar-driven approach.
Also in 2022, the band released Lucifer on the Moon, a complete reinterpretation of Lucifer on the Sofa, reimagined through a dub lens by renowned British producer Adrian Sherwood. The following year, the band released the EP Memory Dust (2023), featuring three tracks left over from the sessions for the previous album, including a cover of Bo Diddley’s “She’s Fine, She’s Mine.”
