Formed in 2001 in Atlanta, United States, Deerhunter has built a musical identity that combines experimentalism, garage rock, psychedelia, and pop melodies. Led by vocalist and guitarist Bradford Cox, the band released its first album in 2005 on Stickfigure Records. The album, originally untitled, became known as Turn It Up Faggot. In 2007, the group gained prominence with Cryptograms, released by Kranky, an album that fused atmospheric passages and noisy textures with more melodic structures.
Global recognition grew with Microcastle (2008), which highlighted the band’s more accessible side and appeared on that year’s best-albums lists. Released digitally in August, the album was released on physical media in October alongside Weird Era Cont., a companion album that explored their more experimental side. This double release cemented Deerhunter’s place among the most prominent names in 2000s indie rock.
In 2010, the band released Halcyon Digest, further refining the balance between pop, dreamlike atmospheres, and experimentation. Next, Monomania (2013) favored a rawer, more visceral sound, closer to garage rock, while Fading Frontier (2015) featured clearer, more melodic arrangements. Their eighth studio album, Why Hasn’t Everything Already Disappeared?, was released in January 2019 on the 4AD label, produced by Cate Le Bon, Ben H. Allen III, Ben Etter, and the band itself.
