Aphex Twin is considered one of the most inventive and influential artists in electronic music. His music, characterized by complex rhythms and melodic soundscapes, is commonly associated with styles such as ambient, techno, IDM (Intelligent Dance Music), drill 'n' bass, and others.
Richard David James was born on August 18, 1971, in Limerick, Ireland. While living in Cornwall, England, he bought his synthesizer at age 12 and began producing his own music at 14, when acid house was already popular in nightlife. In this 1980s environment, James began including his tracks in his DJ sets during his adolescence.
James began using the pseudonym Aphex Twin in 1988. In 1991, his first EP, Analogue Bubblebath, was released. The following year saw the release of his first full-length album, Selected Ambient Works 85–92, which compiles material produced in his early years. The album is considered by critics to be a masterpiece of ambient techno.
Also in the 1990s, the artist released Selected Ambient Works Volume II (1994), ...I Care Because You Do (1995) and Richard D. James Album (1996).
In 2001, Aphex Twin released Drukqs. Its successor, Syro, arrived in 2014 and won the Grammy Award for Best Dance/Electronic Album of 2015.
