Formed in Bristol, England, the band Portishead established itself as one of the most influential names in trip-hop scene in the 1990s, alongside icons such as Massive Attack and Tricky. However, the group’s sound transcends simple labels. By combining a melancholic and intimate atmosphere with elements of electronic music, hip-hop, and jazz, the project has won over a legion of fans around the world.
The group was formed in 1991, conceived by producer Geoff Barrow and vocalist Beth Gibbons, who were soon joined by guitarist Adrian Utley and sound engineer Dave McDonald. From this collaboration came the acclaimed debut album, Dummy (1994), released by Go! Discs and considered a definitive milestone in the history of alternative music and pop culture.
Continuing their discography, the band released the self-titled Portishead (1997) and, after a hiatus of more than a decade, returned in 2008 with the innovative Third, incorporating more experimental and dark sounds, closer to Krautrock.
