Stereophonics was formed in 1992 in Cwmaman, Wales, by Kelly Jones (vocals, guitar, piano), Richard Jones (bass) and Stuart Cable (drums). The band initially performed in clubs doing cover songs. The group was one of the first artists to be signed to V2 Records.
In 1996, they signed with the label and in 1997 their first album, Word Gets Around, was released. The following year, the band won the BRIT Award for best new group. Early in their career, Stereophonics were often compared to their fellow countrymen Manic Street Preachers.
Their second album, Performance and Cocktails, was released in 1999. Two years later, Just Enough Education to Perform arrived, which was to have the title shortened to J.E.E.P., but Daimler-Chrysler opposed the band's plans.
You Gotta Go There to Come Back was released in 2003. After this release, Stuart Cable left the group, being replaced by Argentinian Javier Weyler, who had already participated in Language. Sex. Violence. Other?, the group's fifth studio album.
Stereophonics' first live album, Live from Dakota, was released in 2006. And in 2007, a new studio album, Pull the Pin, was released. That year, guitarist Adam Zindani joined the band. The album Keep Calm and Carry On arrived in 2009. The following year, in June, former drummer Stuart Cable, 40, was found dead at his home in Wales.
The band returned with a new album, Graffiti on the Train, in 2013. Keep the Village Alive, their ninth album, was released in 2015. In 2017, Scream Above the Sounds, their tenth album, was released. The band returned with Kind in 2019. This was followed by Oochya! in 2022 and Make 'Em Laugh, Make 'Em Cry, Make 'Em Wait in 2025.
