American band formed in 1990 in the city of San Francisco, California, The Brian Jonestown Massacre incorporates in its music styles like folk, electronic, psychedelia, blues and garage rock. However, initially, the group had a strong influence of shoegaze, mainly on the album Methodrone, released in 1995. The name of the band is a combination of the name of Rolling Stones guitarist e founder Brian Jones and the Jonestown Massacre, a mass suicide that occurred in 1978 in Jonestown, Guyana, led by religious leader Jim Jones.

Led by vocalist e guitarist Anton Newcombe, The Brian Jonestown Massacre has had a constant line-up change and has released a series of EPS and albums since 1993.

In 2004, the group (alongside Dandy Warhols) was the subject of the award-winning documentary "DIG!". Despite winning the Documentary Jury Grand Prize at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival, DIG !, which was recorded over seven years, did not please some members of the two bands. Newcombe did not like the film to focus more on his problems arising from drug use.

The Brian Jonestown Massacre released in 2014 their thirteenth studio album, entitled Revelation. In 2015, the band released Musique de Film Imaginé, a soundtrack for an imaginary French film, which is a tribute to the great directors of European cinema in the late 1950s and 1960s, such as François Truffaut and Jean-Luc Godard. Musique de Film Imaginé was recorded in Berlin, Germany, in August 2014.

In 2016, the band released the album Third World Pyramid. In early 2017, The Brian Jonestown Massacre released Don't Get Lost. A new album, Something Else, was released in 2018. Self-titled, the band's 18th album was released in March 2019.
