Mundo Livre S/A

Mundo Livre S/A was founded in 1984 in Pernambuco and went on to become one of the leading names in manguebeat. Alongside Chico Science & Nação Zumbi, the group helped shape a scene that fused traditional Pernambuco rhythms with rock, hip-hop, and electronic music. The band’s lead singer and songwriter, Fred 04, was also the author of the manifesto Caranguejos com Cérebro, one of the movement’s theoretical cornerstones.

Their album debut came ten years after the band’s formation, with Samba Esquema Noise (1994). The title refers to Samba Esquema Novo, Jorge Ben’s debut album, and foreshadows the blend of samba, distorted guitars, and experimentation that defines the group’s identity. At the time, the lineup included Fred 04, Otto, Bactéria, Xef Tony, and Fábio Goró. After the second album, Guentando a Ôia (1996), Otto left the band and was replaced by Marcelo Pianinho.

The discography continued with Carnaval na Obra (1998), Por Pouco (2000) and Manuela Rosário’s Other World (2004). Following the EP Bebadogroove (2005), the group released Novas Lendas da Etnia Toshi Babaa (2011).

In 2013, the group collaborated with Nação Zumbi on a special project, Mundo Livre S.A. vs. Nação Zumbi, in which each band re-recorded songs by the other.

In the following years, the albums A Dança dos Não Famosos (2018) and Walking Dead Folia (2022).
