Metronomy is a British electronic pop project founded in 1999 by multi-instrumentalist and producer Joseph Mount in Totnes, Devon, England. With influences that include David Bowie, Devo, and Pavement, their music blends electronic, indie rock, and pop melodies. In their early live performances, Mount was accompanied by Gabriel Stebbing (keyboards and bass) and Oscar Cash (keyboards and saxophone). Their live shows and remixes for artists such as Gorillaz, Architecture in Helsinki, and Kate Nash helped establish Metronomy’s name in the indie scene.
Their debut album, Pip Paine (Pay the £5000 You Owe), was released in 2006 on the Holiphonic Records label. Two years later, Nights Out expanded the project’s audience with a blend of electronic experimentation and danceable tracks, including “Heartbreaker” and “A Thing for Me.”
In 2009, Stebbing left the group, which then welcomed bassist Gbenga Adelekan and drummer Anna Prior. This lineup contributed to The English Riviera, released in April 2011. Nominated for the Mercury Prize, the third album marked the band’s international breakthrough and featured some of their best-known songs, such as “The Look” and “The Bay.”
Their fourth album, Love Letters, was released in March 2014, drawing on influences from 1960s pop and soul. This was followed by Summer 08 (2016), Metronomy Forever (2019), and Small World (2022), the group’s seventh studio album. Throughout these works, Mount has maintained the blend of accessible melodies, experimentation, and retro references that characterizes Metronomy.
Alongside the albums, Mount developed the collaborative series Posse, which began in 2021. Released in July 2024 by Ninja Tune, Posse EP Volume 2 featured guests such as Pan Amsterdam, Naima Bock, Joshua Idehen, and Nourished by Time, with Mount primarily taking on the role of producer.
