American alternative rock in the early 1990s went far beyond grunge. Among the artists who broadened the horizons of that scene is Liz Phair, a singer, songwriter, and guitarist who rose to prominence with Exile in Guyville (1993). Released by Matador Records, her debut album combined a stripped-down production with candid lyrics about sex, relationships, and a woman’s experiences in a predominantly male environment. Produced by Phair and Brad Wood, the album became a landmark of indie rock and a reference point for later generations of female songwriters.
On Whip-Smart (1994), her second album, Phair continued her collaboration with Wood and solidified her blend of pop melodies and incisive lyrics. Following the EP Juvenilia (1995), she released whitechocolatespaceegg (1998), which expanded the sonic universe of her work. This period was also marked by performances at the Lilith Fair festival, an experience that helped her gain confidence on stage.
The album Liz Phair (2003), released by Capitol Records, marked a more explicit move toward mainstream pop. Featuring the production team The Matrix, the album divided opinions and received harsh criticism from some in the press, but it reached a wider audience with the single “Why Can’t I?” and went gold in the United States.
In 2005, the artist released Somebody’s Miracle, her fifth studio album. Her next album, Funstyle (2010), featured a more experimental and irreverent approach. Initially released independently on her website, the album was later released in physical format by Rocket Science Ventures, accompanied by recordings from her early project, Girly-Sound.
In the years that followed, Phair also revisited her roots. In 2018, Matador released the compilation Girly-Sound to Guyville, bringing together a remastered version of her debut album and the home recordings that preceded it. In 2019, the singer published her memoir, Horror Stories.
After eleven years without a new studio album, she returned in 2021 with Soberish, released by Chrysalis Records.
