The band formed in the late 1980s in New York by jazz student Page Hamilton (vocals, guitar), John Stanier (drums), Peter Mengede (guitar) and Henry Bogdan (bass) won the admiration of the public and critics in the 1990s with their alternative metal.
Previously, Hamilton was a member of the group Band of Susans.
Helmet's music could be defined as an accelerated Black Sabbath. Their debut album, Strap It On, was released in 1990.
The 1992 album Meantime featured three of the band's biggest hits, "Unsung", "Give It" and "In the Meantime".
In 1993, Helmet recorded the song "Just Another Victim" in partnership with House of Pain, a hit from the soundtrack of the film Judgment Night. The band subsequently released two more studio albums, Betty (1994) and Aftertaste (1997).
In 1999, the band disbanded.
However, in 2004, Page Hamilton reformed the band with other musicians: bassist Frank Bello (ex-Anthrax) and drummer John Tempesta (ex-Testament). The band released the album Size Matters that same year.
With a new drummer, Mike Jost, Helmet released their sixth album, entitled Monochrome, in 2006. Four years later, in 2010, the band returned with a new studio album, Seeing Eye Dog.
In 2016, the band returned with Dead to the World. Their new album, Left, will arrive in 2023.
