Fontaines D.C. is an Irish band formed in Dublin in 2014 by Grian Chatten (vocals), Carlos O’Connell (guitar), Conor Curley (guitar), Conor Deegan III (bass), and Tom Coll (drums). The band members met while studying at the BIMM music institute in the Irish capital.
With a sound initially associated with post-punk, the quintet gained recognition with Dogrel, their debut album, released in April 2019. Acclaimed by critics, the album received a Mercury Prize nomination and established the band as one of the leading acts in alternative rock at the time.
Their second album, A Hero’s Death, arrived in July 2020, expanding the band’s sound with psychedelic elements and vocal harmonies. In April 2022, the group released Skinty Fia, which reached number one on the charts in the United Kingdom and Ireland.
Released in August 2024, Romance marked the debut of Fontaines D.C. on XL Recordings and their first collaboration with producer James Ford. With tracks like “Starburster” and “Favourite,” the fourth album expanded the group’s musical repertoire, incorporating pop melodies, new textures, and influences from 1990s alternative rock.
In 2026, the band released Dopamine Chamber. Produced by James Ford, this work delves deeper into the group’s sonic evolution by integrating synthesizers, electronic music, and orchestral arrangements into their signature post-punk sound. It explores themes such as alienation, escapism, and the impact of technology on anxiety and emotional disconnection, blending dark lyrics with striking melodies—most notably on tracks like “Marianne,” “Tongue,” and “Where Is Gone?” (featuring Rosalía).
